Skeptics In The Pub Teesside

Teesside Skeptics-in-the-Pub meetings are open to anyone. There are members of the skeptic community who are: students, retired, professors, home carers, atheists, spiritualists, Christians, Muslims, scientists, comedians, historians, office workers, web developers and baristas.  We've even had policemen and criminologists!

We are scientific/rational skeptics in that we believe in general that evidence-based inquiry is the best way to unravel the mysteries of the universe. This form of skepticism is not to be confused with philosophical skepticism or climate change skepticism.  Climate change "skepticism" is denialism in that the people described will not take on board new evidence and refuse to change in light of the facts.Although we favour an evidence-based approach, no one is expected to check their beliefs or opinions at the door - if you hold controversial ideas, you can expect honest enquiry about what you believe and why you believe it, but you will still be welcome.  Don't be concerned about any lack of expertise you might feel, no prior knowledge is needed and all that is required is an enquiring mind.  We have new faces every meeting so don't be concerned about being the only one who nobody will recognise.

What is Skepticism?

Antony Wootten produced a good explanation here.  Short and to the point.

Skepticism

What are the meetings like?

I hope you will feel welcome when you first arrive. If it is your first time along, feel free to introduce yourself or attach yourself to a conversation of interest. Most meetings follow the same rough format: We start by mixing and talking, followed by a brief introduction and news of future events and current issues and then a talk by a visiting or local speaker. After a short break for more social mixing and refills of your beverage of choice, the floor will be open for questions and discussion. Don't expect a late night. We'll finish the formal proceedings at around 9:30, although you are of course welcome to stay in the pub afterwards to continue the discussion if you wish.
